Police Dog Fired for Being Too Polite, Gets New Job as Official Greeter

Most times you see a news story coming out of Australia, it’s about some creature that would soon’s kill you as look at you.

Meth-addicted pythons and kangaroos getting punched by men have also been reported on.

So when you see a picture of a pup who will grow into a mighty and potentially mortiferous German Shepherd in police uniform, you can’t help but wonder what the hell you’re about to read.

What follows will shock you.

In a land where most animals you encounter have the potential to end you, Gavel the police dog found himself losing his job for quite the opposite reason.

The official word from the police was that he “did not display the necessary aptitude for a life on the front line.”

In other words, he was more polite dog than police dog.

He loved few things more than meeting strangers, which meant he preferred playing with the bad guys than taking them down.

Months of training couldn’t change him, and so he found himself out of a job.

Until, that was, a new employer recognized his talents.

Gavel now works at Queensland’s Government House, where his official title is Vice-Regal Dog.

Duties include greeting visitors and attending official functions with Governor Paul de Jersey.

A spokesman for the Office of the Governor told the Brisbane Times that Gavel also “on occasions sits in on briefings with the Governor.”

He’s even shown his support for Queensland in the annual State of Origin rugby league series – one of Australia’s most passionately followed sporting events – by modelling an extremely fetching maroon scarf.

Although getting fired from a job is usually not a nice experience, Gavel is proof that it can sometimes be a blessing in disguise.

If you’re currently in a job that isn’t right for your talents, maybe you can do as Gavel did and see about changing to one that is.
