It’s every dog owner’s worst nightmare.
You’re out walking with your four-legged friend(s) when you lose sight of them.
You call, you whistle, you search, and you wait. And despite all this, there’s still no sign of them.
When Liz and Graham Hampson’s two miniature schnauzers, Charlie and Theo, disappeared into thick fog while out walking in England’s picturesque but remote Lake District, they did all of the above and more.
They even pitched a tent and camped overnight, hoping the pair would return as they called their names out into the dark.
A rescue campaign was set up, which saw over 120 people and two drones joining the search.
96 hours later, there was still no sign of the dogs, and Liz and Graham were beginning to lose hope.
With all conventional search methods exhausted, they had to cook up a new plan.
As Liz explained, “They absolutely love sausages. They have them every Sunday for breakfast, so if there was one food they were going to come back for, it was sausages.
“One of our friends had the intuition to work out roughly where they would be and we started the barbecue there.”
With the aroma of grilled meat filling the air, Charlie and Theo – who must have been hungry after 4 days in the wild – quickly scampered into view.
Liz added, “When they first appeared it was like a mirage. I could not believe it was them. My husband ran up the hill to grab them as I was just shaking and crying. I could not function.”
Thankfully both the barbecue and the dogs’ sense of smell could.
For UK residents of a certain age, the story of Charlie and Theo returning to the smell of sizzling sausages will bring back memories of an iconic TV commercial from the 1990s.
Let’s hope that now they’re back home, they can enjoy their regular Sunday morning treats without getting into an MMA match with Graham or being thrown out of a window.
Seriously, watch the video.
They sure don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
